Coastal Family Medicine Welcomes New Nurse Practitioner to Serve Patients

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., December 15, 2016 - Coastal Family Medicine welcomes Brooke Brown
to their practice. Brown is a board-certified advanced registered nurse practitioner who holds certifications in electronic fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support as well as S.T.A.B.L.E training for neonatal care.

As a student researcher through UF’s Honors Program, Brown contributed to a ground-breaking research study focused on combat veterans.

Before joining Coastal’s primary care team, she was a labor and delivery nurse at Orange Park Medical Center and a Cardiac Step-down nurse with St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

“Ms. Brown is a great addition to our growing practice at Coastal Family Medicine,” said Coastal Family Medicine lead physician Michael Edwards. “Our goal is to offer the best possible care for our patients and having Ms. Brown here helps us achieve this.”

Brown received her Master of Science in nursing as a family nurse practitioner from the University of North Florida. In her undergraduate studies at both UNF and the University of Florida she excelled with honors. Brown was also the recipient of the Walgreens Fellowship Scholarship and a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Four Questions About the Flu Vaccine
With flu season upon us, it’s time to take a look at the flu vaccine and get informed. If you haven’t received your flu vaccine yet, please give us a call to see if you are eligible and if it is right for you.

Why get a flu vaccine?
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), influenza or “the flu” is a disease that can lead to hospitalization or in some cases, death. During October through May, is active flu season and the chances of getting the flu are higher. The more people that are vaccinated, the less it will spread.

How do flu vaccines work?
Antibodies are what protect against infection in your body. Flu vaccines, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are in the vaccine.

Should I get the flu vaccine?
If you are six months of age or older you should get a flu vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). It’s important to get the vaccine each season because its effectiveness declines over time. It is especially recommended for those children younger than 5 and especially under 2 and adults 65 and older, as well as pregnant women and residents of nursing homes. Some people with allergies should check with the doctor first.

What are some benefits of the flu vaccine?
Here are some benefits from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for getting the flu vaccine: 1. Most obviously, it can keep you from getting the flu! 2. May make your illness milder if you get sick. 3. Can help avoid you going to the hospital because it reduces the risk of more serious flu complications. 4. It shows you care because it helps protect others from getting sick.

Dr. Edwards earned his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency program here in Jacksonville. Dr. Edwards is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and Florida Osteopathic Medical Association.

Dr. Edwards, board certified in Family Practice by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Practice, will be treating patients with a wide range of services. Coastal Family Medicine will be providing care for patients of all ages. Services range from routine well-exams to sports physicals, acute care, weight management and elder health. Patients will receive the care and treatment they deserve in a professional and friendly environment.
